Obituary - Lloyd Benson - Cottage 66

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Lloyd Benson on February 8, 2016 at the age of 85. Lloyd, beloved husband of 58 years to Marion and much loved father to Dawn (Dan) and Leslie (Manny) and two lovely grandchildren Keira and Alexa. Lloyd was predeceased by daughter Alexandra (Michael) and brother Harry (Shirley). Lloyd was much loved by nieces Kim (John) and Christine (Brian) and fondly remembered by brother-in-law David Paton and sister-in-law Marian of Merrickville, Ontario. Also missed by two nephews David (Sue) and John Paton. Lloyd spent his early years in Winnipeg with the exception of one year where he stayed with relatives in Grates Cove, Newfoundland. Music was a big part of his life in Winnipeg. He enjoyed playing the electrical guitar and trumpet and also sang bass in a men's quartet. He attended high school at United College and twice gave the valedictorian address. He spent one year in Edmonton working on the oil fields then headed east to study at the University of Toronto. He spent one summer working on the mission field in Alberta for the United Church of Canada and the next three summers working at the Banff Springs Hotel. The career Lloyd chose after graduation was teaching. He enjoyed literature and could recite reams of verses of the romantic poets – so teaching English came naturally to him. Lloyd taught in Toronto at Riverdale Collegiate, Humberside Collegiate and latterly for many years as head of the English Department at Bloor Collegiate. He respected his students and was well liked which gave him many happy memories of his years in the classroom. In the summers Lloyd enjoyed life with his family at the Bruce Beach cottage on Lake Huron. All through life he was an active member of the United Church of Canada. He will long be remembered for his humour, keen wit and kindness. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 12th from 3-6 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street (at Goulding, south of Steeles). Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment York Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests for donations in memory of Lloyd Benson to North York General Hospital Foundation or The Toronto Humane Society.
